Modernization

Modernization is a concept used in sociology and politics. It is the view that a standard, teleological evolutionary pattern, as described in the social evolutionism theories, exists as a template for all nations and peoples. It should not be confused with the sociological concept of rationalization, or the concepts of urbanization and industrialization.
According to theories of modernization, each society would evolve inexorably from barbarism to ever greater levels of development and civilization. The more modern states would be wealthier and more powerful, and their citizens freer and having a higher standard of living. According to the Social theorist Peter Wagner, modernization can be seen as processes, and as offensives. The former view is commonly projected by politicians and the media, and suggests that it is developments, such as new data technology or dated laws, which make modernization necessary or preferable. This view makes critique of modernization difficult, since it implies that it is these developments which control the limits of human interaction, and not vice versa. The latter view of modernization as offensives argues that both the developments and the altered opportunities made available by these developments, are shaped and controlled by human agents. The view of modernization as offensives therefore sees it as a product of human planning and action, an active process capable of being both changed and criticized.

the modernization of a society required the destruction of the indigenous culture and its replacement by a more Westernized one. Technically modernity simply refers to the present, and any society still in existence is therefore modern. Proponents of modernization typically view only Western society as being truly modern arguing that others are primitive or unevolved by comparison. This view sees unmodernized societies as inferior even if they have the same standard of living as western societies. Opponents of this view argue that modernity is independent of culture and can be adapted to any society. Japan is cited as an example by both sides.

  3. the take on modernization was very well presented and discussed. But i believe the information can only be useful if applied to everyday life. Can you enlighten us with how we can maintain this balance between our everyday life and modernization setting aside the challenges and pressures that come along with it.

  4. modernity is essential for any society to grow and yes it can be adapted in positive ways to boost your own culture, in a better manner, however liberalization of any culture to should be to an extent where you are not forgetting your own roots, extremism is bad in every aspect of life, however it should only limit itself to positives!

  5. Modernization is essential element for making progress, but the problem lies in the fact that people who adopt it forget their basics. One must not forget the roots, our tradition is our identity,by incorporating the key aspects of modernization in our culture and tradition we can make a lot of progress.

  6. i like the inquisitive details this particular 'follow up' to modernity has presented. Altough modernity in actual context has been 'true' an evolutionary force binding, guiding and perhaps reshaping cultures rather religions. Though different schools of thought regarding the theory of modernity have been considered, but to a lay man these concepts would appear to be vague i guess the proposition needs to explain a little furthur rather than giving in a blended gist of theories.
Amazingly people regard Globalisation or they may link the underlining theories of it to modernization as channels through which modernity arrives, captures and influences the mind of any particular society. There is more to come.. when generalising unmodernized societies in the write up.. i came to another conclusion thanks to umair that it really is true if we talk about the meaning of modernisation we say 'It is the upheaval or the break of ignorance of a society to a more organised and patterned way of living', than again has not this same concept been there since day one when humans learnt to talk, hunt stating a family evolving into a group and emerging as societies with codes that need to be abided by....
Modernity in essence does approach to all .. altough the channels maybe different but yea! i guess this makes sense and more over a good summary to the evolving theory of modernity..
